La Mouette

As you walk in through the entrance gate of La Mouette, your breath is taken away by a beautiful courtyard. Immediately you are transported out of the buzzing hype of Sea Point and find yourself entranced by this French inspired little piece of heaven. Everyone is so welcoming and friendly; you are treated with the utmost of warmth and care. From start to finish of our evening - everything was flawless.
Greeted with a choice of the 6 course spring tasting menu or the a la carte menu – it is almost impossible to choose. With that, a vast wine list of only the best, we sat for a good half an hour trying to make up our minds.
Finally with a glass of champagne in our hands, a slate filled with beautiful artisanal breads and smoked butter we settled on the a la carte menu. For starters I indulged in the tuna carpaccio, served with ashen cucumber, pickled radish, black garlic mayonnaise and umami dressing. Umami it was. All my senses were immediately drawn to this dish, from the simple beauty of it to the way the tuna just melted in my mouth. Excellently executed - it left me with a fresh palate and wanting more.
Once we had finished our champagne and fully unpacked the wine list, we opted for a Tokara 2011 Directors Reserve. This one falls under top three on our list of favourites, definitely a treat and a must try!
Next I was presented with a plate of roasted sea bass served with tomato fondue, fennel, carrot fondant, smoked aubergine puree, and sauce bourride; the aromas were heavenly! The fish was cooked beautifully and everything else on the plate was delicious! My husband enjoyed the crispy lamb shoulder and fillet served with Buffalo fromage blanc, pickled turnip, water cress puree and puffed barley – it was the epitome of a perfect Sunday roast!
The menu, wine list, service and food are all fantastic. The atmosphere is comfortable and laid back which ensures your evening is not rushed. You will walk out the door with a smile on your face. We had a wonderful evening at La Mouette – I really look forward to going again sometime!
