Farm-to-Table

It is hard not to day dream as you watch the water in the swimming pool glisten like a thousand diamonds under the harsh African sun. The birds are out, there is a cool breeze coming off the ocean; it is a beautiful day. In true South African tradition it is the perfect weather to “crack open a cold one and have a braai”. A time when friends and family come together to sit around the fire to chat as your stomach rumbles at the sound of fatty lamb chops sizzling and crackling on the grid.

This farm-to-table style of eating brings back these moments of nostalgia, hence the reason, this trending eating experience is one of my favorite. It does tend to gravitate towards the more upmarket scale of restaurants, which can be quite pricey. Even so, as a special occasion, it is definitely worthwhile. Some of my best restaurant experiences are those where I have been seated around a bunch of sharing plates. It’s a journey that you have to be open to; something you are allowing the chef to share with you. What is better than an experience shared?

Detroit is slowly making ground in this booming food industry. At the best of time’s finding a great restaurant is like digging for a needle in a hay stack. It takes time to sift through all the traditional American Coney’s and cheese drenched fries to find these hidden gems. Here are two that I have found so far.

Rock City Eatery - Hamtramck

Average cost for two: $50

Its name says it all. A quaint little eatery with a casual, laid back atmosphere. Like the bustling street it sits on, there is a kind of liveliness inside too. A fresh menu that is always changing keeps it interesting - as if the taste and quality of the food wasn’t enough! Designed for sharing, every plate is adorned with detail, making each mouthful a surprise. This is more-ish food. Before you know it, you’ve licked the plate clean and in seconds are onto an entirely different experience. I would suggest going early as the house favorites do tend to run out. You need to try Rock City Eatery, it is an excellent place for friends to have an enjoyable night out.

Republic Tavern – Downtown Detroit

Average cost for two: $100

On the completely opposite side of the scale. This restaurants interior is modern, chic and classy. French inspired farm to table; the sharing plates are classic and beautiful. You can order from the a la carte menu, or do the chef’s tasting menu which has an optional wine pairing. A little bit of Europe in America. Republic provides an extremely pleasant dining experience for gastronomes or anyone alike. Chef Sarah’s menus are inspired by Michigan’s local produce, and boy does she know how to make Michigan shine. Perfect for special occasions, Republic Tavern sits at the top of my list here in Detroit.
